| TIE Talks May | 5/1/13 | Rebecca Pearl-Martinez and Kim Foltz, joint teachers of the Experimental College class “Rising Tide: Climate Change, Vulnerability and Adaptation” gave a talk titled “The Human Face of Climate Change: Case Studies in Agriculture and Water.” They discussed at-risk populations to climate change and how governments are beginning to respond to to this problem by trying to understand human vulnerability and resilience. |
| World Health Day 2013 – Information and Sensor Technologies |
4/8/13 | This day-long event featured cutting-edge engineering research in novel applications of information and sensor technologies for health and the environment. The keynote presentation was given by Dr. Andrey Egorov of the World Health Organization, and breakout workshops showcased Tufts School of Engineering research in Smart Sensors, Disaster Management, Visual Analytics, and New Devices. |
| Feeding Ourselves Thirsty: The Future of Water and Food Production |
4/5/13 | The fourth annual symposium of the Water: Systems, Science, and Society program will present “Feeding Ourselves Thirsty: The Future of Water and Food Production.” As in years past, the day included two expert panels, a keynote speaker, and a student poster session.The Symposium Program is available for download (3.8 MB). |

4/3/13 | In a talk titled “Tea and the Taste of Climate Change” Dr. Selena Ahmed used tea as a case study to help answer the questions: Is climate change changing the taste of our favorite plant foods and beverages? What are possible implications of climate effects on food plants for livelihoods and wellbeing? Dr. Ahmed is an NIH TEACRS Post-doctoral Fellow at Tufts University based in Colin Orians Lab, and her findings were drawn from her field surveys in the Yunnan Province of China, greenhouse experiments and laboratory analyses of phytochemicals in tea. |
| Leontief Prize Ceremony | 3/7/13 | TIE cosponsored Tufts University’s Global Development And Environment Institute 2013 Leontief Prize. The prize is awarded those who have advanced the frontiers of economic thought, and this year’s recipients were Albert O. Hirschman and Frances Stewart. |
| TIE Talks March | 3/13/13 | Professor Cash (of Fletcher’s Agriculture, Food, and Environment Program) discussed the demand for water supply improvements in Queretaro, Mexico. His recent study, where data were collected from in-person surveys of over 800 households in both established neighborhoods and in informal settlements that do not have private water services, demonstrated that there is a substantial willingness to pay for improvements by the residents of informal settlements. |

| Tufts Energy Conference |
3/2-3/13 | TIE helped co-sponsor the annual Tufts Energy Conference (TEC), a dynamic forum for cross-border and cross-sector discussions on pressing energy issues. TEC convenes speakers, students, and professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide complementary and contrasting views on a wide range of energy topics. TEC is organized by a diverse mix of Tufts undergraduates and graduate students from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, the Urban and Environmental Policy & Planning program, and the School of Arts, Sciences & Engineering. |
TIE Talks February |
2/6/13 | TIE hosted Dr. Mary Shultz, Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Tufts, who discussed her work improving the cleanliness of water using nonlinear laser spectroscopy. By applying this chemical technique to the reactions and interactions on the surface of the photocatalyst Ti02, she has begun to enhance the efficiency of environmentally friendly TiO2, with the goal of generating a viable material for cleaning water. Professor Shultz discussed the difficulties in and chemical solutions for cleaning contaminated water, and discussed the importance of doing so for furthering global health. |

How Agricultural Policies Affect Farms’ Environmental Impacts.” He discussed farming and the national policies that govern its environmental impact. |

The event featured student performances about water with a reception and live music to follow. |
| TIE Fellowship Information Session | 11/2/12 | Each year the Tufts Institute of the Environment awards thousands of dollars to graduate students engaged in interdisciplinary, environmental research to facilitate their work. This info session described the requirements of the fellowship, the application process, and tips for writing a successful proposal. |
