Experience

Trad Alroweilly is a Master’s student in the Sustainable Water Management (SWM) program, hosted by TIE. He expects to complete his M.S. in August 2020. Prior to coming to Tufts, Trad studied Civil Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering. As an undergraduate student, he was a member of the Engineers Without Borders chapter at Seattle University and participated in the design and construction of a coffee wastewater treatment system for a farm in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. After graduation, Trad worked as a project engineer for a construction company building a high-rise office tower in downtown Seattle, WA. During that time, he mentored high school students interested in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) through a year-long project imitating real-world engineering challenges.

Current Studies and Future Goals

When asked what he finds most meaningful about his field of study, Trad described the use of aquifers in his home country of Saudi Arabia: “…people relied on ancient aquifers that are almost non-rechargeable. These aquifers are now almost, if not completely, depleted due to the unsustainable use of water. The SWM program promotes the understanding of water in a scientific, societal, and international manner to establish sustainable methods of water use.”

Trad was most interested in the SWM program’s unique focus on both water science and diplomacy. He explains that “TIE’s creativity with the program aligns with my belief that to secure sustainable water for water-troubled regions, international efforts and expertise must be combined.”

Upon completion of the SWM program, Trad plans to work with international organizations or governments that focus on the development of sustainable water management policies and systems in the MENA region. He would later like to explore a PhD in water-related subjects.
