Avalon OwensSchool: Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Department: Biology Research Interests: Conservation and Ecology, Animal Science, Cities & Urban Planning |
Avalon is a PhD candidate in the Biology Department, and expects to complete her studies in May 2021. Before coming to Tufts, Taylor completed her A.B. at Harvard University and her M.S. with the National Taiwan University. Additionally, Avalon used to run a Youtube channel featuring semi-educational insect related material aimed at a Taiwanese audience.
When asked what she found most meaningful about her field of study, Avalon responded with the following: "Light pollution is an easy problem to solve, and one that people seem generally amenable to solving... (There aren't any light pollution denialists, anyway.) So that gives me hope that my actions can make a real differences". Avalon was interested in becoming a TIE Fellow for receiving funding for her work, and meeting "other like-minded environmentalists".
Avalon hopes to continue on in academia once she finishes her studies at Tufts, though she is also interested in science communication.
When not doing school work, Avalon can be found playing board games, and video games, reading, and taking care of her pets (fish, blue death-feigning beetles, and a very cute corn snake).
