Experience

Gina is a PhD candidate in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences studying Biology. She expects to complete her studies in May 2021. Before coming to Tufts, Gina earned her B.A. in Biology from Smith College. In addition to schoolwork and working with TIE, Gina also serves as a Graduate Writing Consultant with the Academic Resources Center, and is also a contributing writer for Outside JEB (Journal of Experimental Biology). She has had popular science articles appear in Smithsonian Magazine, Popular Science, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, Salon, and more.

Current Studies and Future Goals

When asked what she found most meaningful about her field of study, Gina responded with the following: "I study how the basal ganglia, a part of the brain important for the coordination of movement, affects behavioral variability. This research will help us better understand basal ganglia disorders like Parkinson’s disease that result in abnormal motor variabilities. I love studying the neurological and physiological mechanisms underlying animal behaviors".

Gina hopes to lead a group of individuals passionate about translating the work of scientists for broad audiences by working as the Director of Communications for a research institute of a university science department once she completes her studies at Tufts.
