Experience

Elly is a graduate student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) in the department of Media Arts, majoring in Video Performance and Installation. Elly expects to complete her studies in August 2019. Before coming to Tufts, Elly earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). While at PLU, Elly worked as an international Peer Advisor as Rieke scholar. Elly previously lived in the Pacific Northwest where she studied painting and spent her time hiking and exploring the intricate ecologies. In addition to pursuing her own studies at the SMFA, Elly also attends various lectures and exhibitions. She has also collaborated with the dance and performance departments.

Current Studies and Future Goals

When asked what she found most meaningful about her field of study, Elly responded with the following: "There is an open-endedness in the imaginative power of art that I find exhilarating and essential to communicate, reflect and generate new ways of thinking and being in response to the earth. Through embodied and interdisciplinary research methods and technology, I make performative works that seek to question, subvert, reflect and uncover alternatives to dominant behaviour and epistemic narratives in relation to the environment and to the female body".

When asked what interested her in becoming a TIE Fellow, Elly responded with the following: "It’s been interesting carrying out interdisciplinary artistic research within the structure of the Tufts Institute of the Environment research fellowship. It has been a research journey filled with site specific and temporal research, meetings and presentations for the fellows and the Tufts community. This combination of activities has created a feeling of an environmental research laboratory where different schools of thoughts and research methodologies have been shared, challenged and discussed. The site specific research in Montana as well as the questions and conversations that have emerged within the fellowship community has been the most interesting to me.

Elly plans to move to Oslo, Norway to continue her interdisciplinary research and art practice once she completes her studies at Tufts. Long term, she would like to pursue a PhD in somatic ecofeminist research.

Fun Facts!

When not doing school work, Elly can be found dancing ("alone or with eclectic people to all the great pulsating music out there!"), running, hiking, or ice dipping.
