Sahrin Jahan is a Master’s student in the Sustainable Water Management (SWM) program, hosted by TIE. She expects to complete her M.S. in August 2020. Prior to coming to Tufts, Sahrin completed her M.S in Environmental Studies & Resource Management and her B.S in Environmental Sciences. She also worked at the International Union for Conversation of Nature (IUCN) in Bangladesh. There, she was involved with the Biodiversity Conflict Mitigation Project around the Refugee Camp of Cox’s Bazar District. This project sought to address the human-wildlife conflicts that arose after the influx of Muslim refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh; specifically the issues around blocking the migration path of Asian elephants moving between the two countries. Under the IUCN project, teams of refugee volunteers were formed and trained to mitigate human-elephant conflict by steering elephants away from the camp area. The teams were also trained to educate the Rohingya people about elephants and the importance of their conservation.
Sahrin has a special appreciation for Tufts University’s unique academic values and nonconformity in addressing global water challenges through the SWM program. As she describes, “This TIE program will allow me to contribute to research-oriented collaboration with individuals of unique intercultural and interdisciplinary backgrounds. Interaction with Tufts’ globally engaged faculty will add tremendous depth to my academic experience.”
Following graduation, Sahrin’s plans include applying innovative techniques for water conservation and community-based water resource management. She also wants to travel the world to learn different local and traditional techniques/knowledge of water resource conservation management.
In her free time, Sahrin loves to travel, talk with local communities, and enjoy their various cultures.
